Macedonia: MNT Fest Will Host Theaters from Six Countries

The Macedonian National Theater (MNT) will host the first International Theater Festival "MNT Fest" which starts Sunday and will run through June 5. The Festival will feature plays by renowned producers and directors. The Festival will host the national theaters from Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan and the Shakespeare’s Theater “Globe”, based in London.

The Festival will open with "The Eternal House", performed by the Macedonian National Theater, as a substitute for the announced "As You Like It" by Tbilisi’s State Theater. Its performance is postponed for the second half of June due to the floods in Serbia, being a destination to stage plays along with Macedonia.

Tomorrow, Zvezda Angelovska’s monodrama "Silver Wedding" will be staged. On May 27, Sofia-based Theater "Ivan Vazov" will perform "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest", directed by Aleksandar Morfov. The National Theater from Azerbaijan will play "I…Us" directed by Guner Satay on May 28, whereas on May 29, the Montenegro National Theater will perform "Everyman Dzilas" by director Radmila Vojvodic. The Croatian National Theater will perform "MedeJa" by Tomaz Pandur on May 31. Serbian National Theater will perform Sasa Gabric’s "The Parliamentarian" on June 3. The theater brand, Shakespeare’s Theater "Globe" will perform "Hamlet", directed by Dominic Dromgoole and Bill Buckhurst on June 5, when the festival will be closed.

According to Macedonian National Theater officials, the new international festival will promote MNT as a national theater similar to the European national theaters and will thus become an important theater hub in South-East Europe for its production and links with other national theaters.

"The festival will host huge theater productions, with 50-60 people from the national theaters, our future collaborators in important projects," said Dejan Projkovski, Artistic Director of MNT, at a press conference.

Shakespeare’s Theater "Globe" is the first laureate for the outstanding achievement award which is introduced by the Macedonian National Theater this year and will be awarded during the first Theater Festival "MNT Fest". The award symbolizes the theatrical tradition in Macedonia and will be bestowed each year to authors and institutions for their theatrical art contributions.

For the first edition of the International Theater Festival "MNT Fest", the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Macedonia has allocated MKD 3 million.
